Intended as a community space, this House of Celebration sits lightly between 2 Port Jackson Fig trees. It aims to capture the tangible and intangible qualities of its site on Cabarita Beach, to develop a sustainable and sympathetic structure to its place and its users.
The 2 trees provide a natural threshold between 2 spaces, creating a clear distinction between public and private. A connecting bridge between the two acts as a funnel, converging and releasing into spaces. Along with the orientation of the structure, screens and louvers’, the element of concealing and revealing that is embedded in the experience of the natural landscape is enhanced. Its construction emphases a duality between light and heavy, with servant spaces being constructed out of rammed earth and served spaces being of a light steel and timber framed construction.
